LITTER BOX AND LITTER BOX SUPPLIES

Over our years of breeding, we have used many different types of litter, and we are always trying new products, because all of our kittens are trained to use a litter box.

We have tried different corn-based litters, walnut shells, silicone crystals, Boxiecat premium clay litters. We like the way they work except they are all dusty, and some of them are very crunchy if they are tracked on a hard floor.

We use Pea Husk Clumping Cat Litter, Wood pellets, or Tidy Breeze Litter System for little kittens because they are the best and safest for them.

We won’t introduce your kitten to sand because it’s very easy to transfer a kitten from pellet to sand, and almost impossible from sand to pellets. This gives you the option to use whichever litter you prefer.

Cats love to rummage and scatter the sand in all directions, they love this much more than just sitting on pellets.

We recommend to use pellets (Wood pellets, Pea Husk Clumping Cat Litter or Tidy breeze system) for families who live in a small apartment or families with known allergies.

Cats can be traumatized during a move to a new environment. To prevent spraying and other stress-related litter box problems, help your cat feel secure in its new home. Confine it to one room for a couple of days, so that it can acclimate to the new area without becoming overwhelmed. Equip the room with all of the comforts of home...a large litter box, a bed, food, water, toys, scratching post and an elevated hiding spot. Be sure to spend extra time every day playing with your cat during this difficult time.

And please remember, Russian blue cats are very picky, they love to use a nice and clean toilet. If the toilet will be dirty, she could probably find another place…

An extra-large box is more comfortable, but it takes more space and extra litter. So, if you have enough space then we recommend buying an extra-large.

Here are our favorite cat litters

Option #1 Wood Pellets

We really like wood pellets. They are easy to clean and safe for cats. Change the wood pellets as needed. If the litter box is close to the toilet, you can just put small amounts in the toilet and flush it.

This is one of the best options if you are planning on putting the litter box in a bathroom.

If you decide to use wood pellets, we recommend using a Sophresh (or Modkat) plastic litter box and bags for this litter. The bags help keep litter box clean.

We recommend these wood pellets:

Weruva Hinoki Wood Cat Litter (clumping) - https://amzn.to/3Egzpvg

The Benefits of using wood pellets for cat litter

The first and most important advantage of wood pellet cat litter is to do with your cat’s health. When using the litter box, your cat digs in with its paws, which it will later lick and bite when cleaning itself. If your cat ingests bits of regular clumping litter, it can cause digestive issues, such as a blockage, for example.

Wood pellets are free from added chemicals and are generally all-natural and dust-free, which reduces the risk of respiratory problems for your cats.

Most cat litters only cover up unpleasant odors, but pine or  hinoki wood litters actually help to reduce and eradicate odor. When wood pellets get wet, they degrade into sawdust, which retains and removes urine and ammonia smells. Pine pellets also effectively reduce odor-causing microorganisms due to their inherent antibacterial characteristics.

Many cat owners have discovered that clay does not effectively absorb scents, whereas wood pellets offer a mild, pleasant, and natural aroma. Furthermore, pine naturally contains antibacterial qualities; shikimic acid, which may be found in pine trees, has been demonstrated to reduce and prevent dangerous germs.

Because wood and pine pellets are lighter in weight compared to regular clay litter, it is easier to carry, fill the litter tray, and dispose of used litter. Clay litter is heavy, making cleaning the litter box a much more difficult task. Wood pellets are lightweight and, when wet, they simply convert into sawdust.

Option #2 Pea Husk Clumping Cat Litter🌿

Pea husk litter is made from 100% natural pea fibers, making it completely biodegradable and free from harmful chemicals. This lightweight litter is gentle on kittens’ delicate paws and comes in two scents: vanilla and lavender.

We tested this Catit Pea Husk Litter for several weeks to assess its performance in areas where natural litters often fall short, such as clumping and odor control β€” and we were very impressed.

🌟 What We Like

  • Safe, natural, and super effective!

  • Gentle on kittens’ delicate paws

  • Excellent clumping

  • Minimal dust and tracking

  • Flushable

  • Outstanding odor control

βœ… Summary

For one or two cats in a household, this litter is our top choice. It is safe, natural, and highly effective at controlling odors while keeping litter boxes clean. It also supports the health and comfort of your kittens and adult cats alike.

Our personal favorite is the Vanilla-scented version, which leaves a subtle, pleasant fragrance without overwhelming sensitive noses.

Important Notes:

  • Use a scoop with wide holes for best results
  • Not compatible with litter robots

Option #3 Tidy Cats Breeze

  • Tidy Cats Breeze Litter Box System β€Ί

  • Tidy Cats Breeze Hooded Litter Box System β€Ί

Benefits of the Tidy Cats Breeze Litter System

  • No sand or dust at all β€” keeps your home clean!
  • Very easy to clean and maintain

Important: Not all kittens take to the Tidy Cats Breeze system, so if you are considering using it, please let us know.

Option #4 Litter Robot

We have a few Litter Robots in the house. And we love it!

It’s very easy to use. If you have a big house, you can keep a wood toilet and a litter robot, one in a bathroom and one in the basement, for example.

Plusses and minuses of Litter Robots

Plusses:

  • No need to scoop.
  • Change the bag once every other week.
  • The litter will always be clean.

Minuses:

  • The cat will carry the litter from the Litter Robot to the floor on his paws, we have not found the way to avoid this.
  • The Litter Robot takes a lot of space and needs to be near an electrical outlet.
  • If your cat will have diarrhea, you will not be able to see it (which is very important to see and address for your vet)
  • The Robot is not easy to clean, and you will need to clean it sometimes.

We do not buy β€œspecial Litter-Robot bags”, we use β€œSophresh Drawstring Cat Litter Box Liners” (size Large) - https://amzn.to/3Uv88Ke

With the Litter Robot we recommend using these clay litters:

1) Ever Clean Extra Strength Unscented Clumping Clay Cat Litter, 42 lbs. (4 small bags)

2) Fresh Step Ultra Unscented Clumping Clay Litter - https://amzn.to/3Wxts4w

The smaller bags are easier to dump into the Robot than the large box.

Be careful to not overfill the robot. There’s a line on the liner. Overfilling the robot causes excessive wear on the motor.

LITTER BOX FURNITURE OPTIONS

If you are planning to place the litter box somewhere in a room, we can recommend this simple cat litter box enclosure. We have two of them, one on top of the other.

For a trapping mat we use simple scratching boards, and we change them regularly.
